To everyone in our community;What if Roe v. Wade is just the beginning? I don’t know if it has sunk in yet what it means to lose a Constitutional right that we have taken for granted for 50 years. The war against women is real. The threats to our health, our careers and our life choices are substantial. We are at code red, and it is not an exaggeration to say that our democracy is under siege. What if we will soon see a rollback of additional civil rights for both men and women? I know many of you want to get involved, but don’t know where to start or how to get involved. I researched specific suggestions on how to help. Right now, the most important thing is to elect Democrats on both the state and federal levels so that we can prevent voter suppression, elect pro-choice candidates, eliminate the filibuster, and expand the Supreme Court. We must all commit to getting out the vote. Every single vote counts. It is possible to change the dangerous direction in which our country is heading, but only if we all do our part.

Canvass for your local candidates. Call their campaign headquarters and volunteer to walk door to door with them, send texts, and join phone banks. Volunteer in their campaign headquarters to answer phones, stuff envelopes and distribute lawn signs and campaign posters.

Join your local town Democratic Committee. They will direct you on how to volunteer for both local candidates and in national elections. Also, let them know if you might be interested in running for office, whether on the local, state, or federal level. They will provide advice and guidance on what this entails.

Make sure you and your family members and friends are all registered to vote. If you have a NYS driver’s license, you can register to vote on-line at the NY DMV website. If you don’t have a driver’s license, go to voterizer.org where you will be walked through a simple procedure for registering. And if you are not sure whether you are registered, or whether your registration is still valid, go to vote.org to check your voting status.

Finally, let your family and friends in NY know that they can request absentee ballots online if they think they might not be available to vote in person.

Write Postcards to Help Persuade Voters
Write postcards to voters in your home state, as well as to voters in swing states. You can do this from home. You can host postcard writing parties in your backyard. Handwritten colorful postcards to voters have been found to be very effective. They are used to give voters specific information about voter registration voting dates and locations, support particular candidates. There are many organizations you can join where you will be given all the information you need to write postcards. You will get a script and the names and addresses of voters in locations where help is most needed. In most cases, you will need to supply your own postcards and stamps. Postcards can be purchased on- line.

They also have great zoom meetings with incredible nationally recognized speakers so you can educate yourself further about what is going on politically. There is a chapter in NYC if you wish to meet up with other like-minded people to write the postcards, but it isn’t necessary. People from all over the country sign on to the meetings. Follow them on Facebook too.

They use the Cook political report, Nate Silver’s 538 among others. FM has raised a ton of money with NO overhead. Let’s discuss this further at our next meeting.
